I’m the Mom, That’s Why!

Have you ever pushed your Mom (Dad, Guardian) to the brink? Pushed them to the point that they finally exclaimed, “Because I’m the MOM, that’s why!”

Welcome to a ROWE.

You are all out there pushing your managers to the brink.

Why can’t I work from home?

Why can’t I leave early, come in late, go to my kids soccer game, start happy hour at 4pm, nap in the afternoon, throw my alarm clock out the window . . .

Why can’t I be an ADULT??? Why why why??? (Can I have some cheese with that WHINE?)

Why are we asking other adults to give us permission to live our lives (part of which includes work)?

Wonder if we all revolted?

Companies [should] hire adults to produce RESULTS not serve time.

It’s not a prison with a warden. It’s not a prison where we need to be led from our cell to the yard for our 15 minute break. It’s not a prison where we need to listen for the lunch bell and then be escorted back to our cell (cube) afterward – lest we get distracted along the way.

The workplace is set up for millions of adults to waste their lives putting in their time.

And the warden is in charge.

When do you get paroled?

    Hey. Good point.
There is no reason. But there is a reason why it does not change. People and managers feel it’s dangerous, or a joke, or we have other things to deal with.

    And they are right.

And they are officially deciding what I should do. It’s in my contract… And I signed it because all contracts are almost the same (still few companies are roweing).

And I am not sure that it’s my manager’s role to change my way of living, is it? Is it my own job? Where should I start?

    Mickael.

Mickael – your conundrum is REAL. But think of it this way . . . the contract you have should be about the outcomes you need to deliver . . . not the time you are going to put in.

It’s always positive for you to keep all of your discussions with your ‘warden’ about what you are going to deliver. Not what time you come in, or leave.

I know it’s hard. Very hard. But it’s time for all of us to take our lives back.

    Thought-provoking comment, Mickael!

I understand why people (managers, leaders) don’t “get” ROWE.

I also understand that once you do “get it”, the fact that the traditional work environment a terrible ssytem is just glaring and extremely frustrating.

And it is a social change, so it needs to come from society and employees shouldn’t necessarily expect managers to get it right away and jump on board.

Once you get it, it’s easy to get so frustrated and excited that you lose your opportunity to influence your organization. I think it would be most effective for ROWE supporters to become MVPs at their organizations and respectfully introduce this change realizing that it is a totally different mindset for leaders and that they may be open to eventually if it is introduced gently and respectfully from a top-performer.

And, this social movement will eventually gain enough momentum that organizations will no longer be able to survive if they ignore it. Let’s make it happen!!
